OTD: Umar Gul was born in 1984

Umar Gul was born on October 15, 1982, in Peshawar. Gul made his Test debut in August 2003 and played a total of 47 Test matches for Pakistan. He took 163 wickets at an average of 34.06.

He played his first ODI match in April 2003 and featured in 130 games, taking 179 wickets at an average of 29.34, an economy of 5.19, and a strike rate of 33.8. 

In T20Is, Gul played his debut game against Kenya in September 2007. He played a total of 60 T20I games for Pakistan and finished with 85 wickets at an average of 16.97. Gul has the best bowling average among the bowlers who have taken more than 50 wickets for Pakistan in T20Is.

He was also the leading wicket-taker in both the 2007 and 2009 ICC T20 World Cups, helping Pakistan reach the final and later win the title in 2009. He recorded the first-ever five-wicket haul in T20I history. In 2009, Gul took five wickets for six runs, which was then the best bowling figure in T20Is. 

He was twice named in the ICC World ODI XI in 2009 and 2011 and also won the ICC T20I Performance of the Year in 2013. He remains among the top-ranked bowlers with a rating of 865 in the ICC’s all-time T20I bowler rankings. From September 2007 to July 2010, Gul remained among the top 10 bowlers in ICC rankings.

Gul retired from all forms of cricket in October 2020, ending a 20-year career. He transitioned into coaching and has served as bowling coach for Quetta Gladiators, bowling consultant for Peshawar Zalmi, and interim bowling coach for the Pakistan national team.
