OTD: Saeed Ajmal was born in 1977

Saeed Ajmal was born on October 14, 1977, in Faisalabad, Punjab. He made his international debut in 2008 in an ODI against India at the age of 30. His Test and T20I debut came in 2009. 

Ajmal played 35 Tests, 113 ODIs, and 64 T20Is for Pakistan. He finished with 178 Test wickets and is one of the four bowlers who made their debut after the age of 30 to take more than 100 Test wickets. His Test career peaked in 2011 when he took a total of 50 wickets in eight games at an average of 23.86. He is one of the four Pakistan bowlers who have picked 50 or more wickets in a calendar year in Test cricket. In January 2012, Ajmal reached second position in the ICC Test rankings for bowlers and remained there till July.

Ajmal took 184 wickets in ODIs at an average of 22.72. From April 2011 to April 2015, Ajmal remained among the top five bowlers in ICC rankings. In March 2013, Ajmal achieved 801 rating points and became only the third Pakistani bowler to surpass the 800-rating points mark. In 2013, Ajmal picked a total of 62 wickets in 33 games and became only the second Pakistan bowler to take more than 60 wickets in a year. Since 2001, no bowler has managed to take more wickets in a year in ODIs than Ajmal.

In T20Is, Ajmal took 85 wickets in 63 outings at an average of 17.83, an economy of 6.36, and a strike rate of 16.8. Among the Pakistani bowlers who have taken more than 80 wickets in T20Is, Ajmal has the second-best average after Umar Gul. From November 2011 to August 2014, Ajmal remained among the top 10 bowlers in ICC rankings.
