Sri Lanka opener Pathum Nissanka surpassed two records held by Virat Kohli in Asia Cup with his sensational knock against India in the Super Four stage of Asia Cup 2025.

Nissanka went past Kohli’s prominent record of being the highest run-getter in the history of the Asia Cup in the T20 version. Kohli had scored 429 runs in nine innings, while Nissanka’s century took him to 434 runs in 12 appearances. He also eclipsed Kohli’s tally of four 50-plus scores in the T20 Asia Cup. The 107-run knock was Nissanka’s fifth 50-plus score.

Although Nissanka’s knock came in a losing cause, he secured the Player of the Match award for his blitz which consisted of seven fours and six sixes. He also became just the fourth Sri Lankan to record a ton in each of the three international formats, joining the likes of Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kusal Perera.

Nissanka’s most productive shot was the pull, which yielded him 37 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday, September 26. Sri Lanka ultimately lost the contest in the Super Over. Through Nissanka’s brilliance, they were able to level scores with India. However, the Super Over did not go the way of the Charith Asalanka-led unit.

Nissanka ended up as the highest run-getter for Sri Lanka in what was a topsy-turvy campaign. They emerged as Group B toppers by winning three games in a row, all while batting second. However, the Super Four stage turned out to be a forgettable phase. The Lankans were knocked out even before the high-octane contest against India, as they lost to Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Meanwhile, India and Pakistan have secured their berth for the summit clash and will meet for the third time in the tournament as they come head to head in Dubai on September 28.
