Legendary Australia captain Ian Chappell celebrated his 82nd birthday on September 26, 2025. He made his Australia debut in 1964 and played 75 tests till his retirement in 1980. Chappell also captained Australia to the final of the first-ever ODI World Cup in 1975.

Chappell made 5345 runs in 75 tests at an average of 42.42 with 14 centuries and 26 fifties. He also played 16 ODIs, scoring 673 runs at an average of 48.07 with eight fifties. 1. 165 vs West Indies, 1968

This was the second Test of the five-test series between Australia and the West Indies and was played in Melbourne. West Indies batted first and posted 200, with Roy Fredricks making 76 and Basil Butcher making 42 even as Graham McKenzie took 8/71. Australia responded with 510, with Captain Bill Lawry making 205 and Ian Chappell making 165 in 320 balls with 16 fours to his name.

Chappell added 198 runs with Lawry for the second wicket and helped Australia put immense pressure on the West Indies for the second innings. This was enough, as the Windies made only 280 despite 74 by Seymour Nurse and 67 by Garry Sobers, as Australia won the Test by an innings and 30 runs.

2. 192 vs. England, 1975

This was the 4th and final Test of the Ashes 1975 between England and Australia and was played at the Oval. Australia batted first and posted a massive 532/9d, thanks to Rick McCosker’s 127 and captain Ian Chappell’s 192 with 17 fours to his name. He added 274 runs for the second wicket with McCosker and helped Australia put up the huge score.

In response, England made 191, with Jeff Thomson and Max Walker sharing eight wickets. Asked to follow on, England made 538 in the second innings, with Bob Woolmer making 149 and John Edrich making 96. Set 198 to win, Australia finished on 40/2 but won the Ashes series 1-0.

3. 196 vs Pakistan, 1972

This was the first Test between Australia and Pakistan in 1972 and was played in Adelaide. Pakistan made 257 batting first thanks to 64 by captain Intikhab Alam and 72 by Wasim Bari, as Dennis Lillee and Bob Massie took four wickets each. Australia replied with 585 runs as Ian Chappell hammered his career-best 196 off 243 with 21 fours and four sixes while Rod Marsh made 118 and Ross Edwards 89. 

Pakistan managed only 214 in the second innings, with Sadiq Mohammad making 81, as Ashley Mallett taking 8/59. Pakistan lost the game by an inning and 114 runs.
