Former Sri Lankan all-rounder Farveez Maharoof was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on this day, September 7, in 1984. Maharoof made his ODI and Test debuts for Sri Lanka in 2004 against Zimbabwe, while his T20I debut came in 2006 against England.

India and Sri Lanka clashed in the fifth ODI of the seven-match series in Ahmedabad in 2005. India were asked to bat first, with Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid scoring 103 each, taking the team to 285/8 in 50 overs. Maharoof bowled only five overs, conceding 20 runs, but struck with four wickets. His scalps included Gambhir, Venugopal Rao, Suresh Raina, and Ajit Agarkar.

2. 5/42 vs India, Dambulla, 2010

Maharoof often thrived against India, and this performance came in the 2010 Asia Cup in Dambulla. India were asked to bat first and could only make 209, with Rohit Sharma top-scoring with 69 and MS Dhoni (41) and Dinesh Karthik (40) chipping in with forties. Maharoof was the main reason for India’s collapse, claiming 5/42 while opening the bowling. His five-wicket haul included a hat-trick, dismissing Ravindra Jadeja, Praveen Kumar, and Zaheer Khan.

1. 6/14 vs West Indies, Brabourne, 2006

Maharoof’s best bowling performance in ODIs came in the 2006 Champions Trophy match between Sri Lanka and West Indies at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. His 6/14 is also the best bowling figures in ICC Champions Trophy history. Maharoof dismissed Brian Lara, Wavell Hinds, Dwayne Bravo, Marlon Samuels, Dwayne Smith, and Carlton Baugh as West Indies were bundled out for just 80 runs.
