Indian cricketers including Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gillhave made their way to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on Saturday, August 30 for fitness and pre-season tests. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur were also present at the state-of-the-art venue for the same.
Among the above, Rohit and Siraj are not in India’s Asia Cup 2025squad. Rohit had retired from T20Is after the winning the T20 World Cup last year, while Siraj was not selected in the Asia Cup squad.
Wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, who is a part of the Asia Cup squad, has been at the CoE for the past three days. On the other hand, a few players like Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav are playing in the ongoing edition of the Duleep Trophy..
Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shardul and Sarfaraz Khan are also present at the CoE and are set to play the semi-final of the Duleep Trophy for West Zone next week. Jaiswal is one of the five standbys for the upcoming Asia Cup.
As far as the semi-finals are concerned, South Zone will have to name a new skipper. Tilak Varma has been included in the Asia Cup squad and will not be available for the match. There are reports that Kerala’s Mohammed Azharuddeen, the vice-captain, will be promoted to the captaincy role. However, Sai Kishore, Devdutt Padikkal and N Jagadeesan are other experienced candidates who could be banked upon.
Injury concerns loom over Mukesh
Meanwhile, East Zone have suffered a setback as Mukesh Kumar did not bowl in the second innings against North Zone due to a niggle sustained in the first innings in Bengaluru, according to The Hindu. For the unversed, he sat out for nine overs in the first innings to nurse his thigh and groin before getting on with bowling. The Bengal pacer came out to bat in East Zone’s first innings.
