OTD 2017 Bangladesh won their first Test against Australia

OTD 2017 Bangladesh won their first Test against Australia

It was on this day, August 29, in 2017, when Bangladesh created history by defeating Australia for the first time in a Test match. Bangladesh achieved the feat in the first Test of the two-match series in 2017 against Australia. The match was played at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur.

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and chose to bat first on a rank turner in Mirpur. The ball turned and bounced from day one, as the hosts played only two pacers in Mustafizur Rahman and Shafiul Islam. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Shakib Al Hasan, and Taijul Islam were the spinners in the Bangladesh XI.

Tamim Iqbal made 71 off 144 balls while Shakib Al Hasan made 84 runs in 133 balls with 11 fours. Nasir Hossain scored 23; Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan contributed 18 runs each as Bangladesh posted 260 runs in the first innings. Pat Cummins, Ashton Agar, and Nathan Lyon picked three wickets for Australia.

Australia tried their best as Matt Renshaw made 45 and Ashton Agar made 41*, while Peter Handscomb and Pat Cummins contributed with 33 and 25 runs respectively, while trying to negate vicious spin by Bangladeshi bowlers.

Australia managed 217 runs in their first innings, conceding a lead of 43 runs in the process. For Bangladesh, Shakib Al Hasan took 5/68, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz took three wickets.

Then in the second innings, Bangladesh benefitted from Tamim Iqbal, who got 78 runs in 155 balls with eight fours, while captain Mushfiqur Rahim made 41, Bangladesh posted a respectable 221 in the second innings, setting Australia a 265-run target on a pitch that had broken down significantly.

Chasing a stiff target, Australia were kept on track by David Warner, who played a stellar knock of 112 runs in 135 balls with 16 fours and one six. He was aided by Steve Smith (37) and Pat Cummins (33*); however, Shakib starred with 5/85 and ten wickets in the match as Australia were bowled out for 244 runs and lost their first-ever Test to Bangladesh by 20 runs. Shakib was named the Player of the Match for his 84 and 10/153.
