The Dr HD Kanga League is a cricket tournament in Mumbai, which has featured many legendary cricketers over the years. Kanga Cricket League is named after Hormasji Kanga, who played 43 first-class matches as an all-rounder, and was also picked for the Indian team. He was the first Indian batter to score a double century in first-class cricket.

The league started in 1948, with the main goal being to help batters cope better with wet conditions. This is because the tournament is played in monsoon months across Mumbai’s famous maidans. The damp and unpredictable conditions make run-scoring difficult.

Stalwarts like Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Sandeep Patil, Zaheer Khan, and Dilip Vengsarkar have played in the league over the years. They tried to play the tournament whenever they could, as they felt that the experience would help them succeed in international cricket. In fact, Gavaskar had used the tournament to muster a comeback.

Speaking of the league’s hustory, Vithal Patil holds the record for picking the most wickets. He has 759 wickets for the Dadar Union Cricket Club between 1952 and 1984. Meanwhile, Aditya Tare is the only batter to have scored a double century. He achieved the feat while playing for Victory Cricket Club against Fort Vijay Cricket Club in 2013. Furthermore, Neil Narvekar has the fastest century in the tournament, getting to the landmark off just 29 balls, while playing for Parkophene Cricketers against Khar Gymkhana.

Mumbai has always been known for its passion for cricket. The City of Dreams has been the breeding ground for many talented cricketers who have represented the nation with pride. However, in recent times, not too many top stars have played in the league. Sarfaraz Khan, however, broke the trend by playing in the latest edition of the tournament. He represented Parkophene Cricketers against the Islam Gymkhana.
