India travelled to Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series in August 1997. In the first Test, Sri Lanka piled up a total of 952 runs and declared their innings. It is still the highest total by a team in Test cricket.

The second Test of the series was played in Colombo, where India won the toss and elected to bowl. Sri Lanka were bundled out for 332 runs in the first innings with Aravinda de Silva being the highest scorer with his 146.

India made 375 runs in the first innings with the help of centuries from Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly before Sri Lanka finished the third day with 77 runs for the loss of one wicket, with Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama were in the middle.

On the fourth day, August 12, Abey Kuruvilla dismissed Jayasuriya for 199 runs. It was his fourth century in Test cricket, making him only the fourth batter to get dismissed on 199 runs in Test cricket.
