OTD | Sandeep Lamichhane, only Nepal cricketer to play in IPL, was born in 2000

Sandeep Lamichhane, the cricketer who put Nepal cricket on the international scene, was born on this day, August 2, in 2000. One of the most exciting young cricketers from Nepal, Lamichhane is an excellent leg-spinner, a difficult art to master.

Lamichhane, who was born on August 2, 2000, rose to stardom at the age of 14 and was destined for greatness from the beginning. The young player was known to trouble the best batters with his skills with the ball

After moving to the Chitwan district, Lamichhane began training at the Chitwan Cricket Academy, which is managed by Raju Khadka, the former captain.

Lamichhane was chosen for the national under-19 training camp after being asked to bowl in the nets during a visit by Nepal’s coach, Pubudu Dasanayake, and captain, Paras Khadka. When Lamichhane was fourteen years old, Dasanayake was the one who initially recognised his ability.

He initially gained fame when he was selected for the World XI in a Twenty20 match against the West Indies. The Nepal spinner, who was making his international debut, bowled just one over, giving up 12 runs, and was not given another opportunity to bowl.

He made his ODI debut against Netherlands one day prior to his 18th birthday and bowled 10 overs, claiming the wicket of Stephen Myburgh.

Then in 2018, Lamichhane became the first Nepal cricketer to be bought in an IPL auction, when Delhi Capitals picked him. Lamichhane also received a mention by Indian PM Narendra Modi.

He made his IPL debut against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and picked one wicket for 25 runs. Overall, he played nine games for Delhi across two IPL seasons and picked 13 wickets, with a best of 3/36.

He has also played T20 cricket in the Pakistan Super League, Caribbean Premier League, the Big Bash League, and The Hundred, among other competitions.

An 18-year-old girl accused Sandeep of sexually assaulting her and filed a police complaint in September 2022. A court in Kathmandu sentenced him to eight years in prison in January 2024. When he landed in Nepal during the BBL season that year, he was taken into custody. In May 2024, he was exonerated of the rape allegations after filing an appeal with a higher court.

Overall, Lamichhane has played 62 ODIs and taken 127 wickets, with a best of 6/11; and in 62 T20Is, he has 117 wickets, with a best of 5/9. He has also captained Nepal in international cricket.
