Mitchell Owen came out to bat at a pivotal moment in the series opener of the five-match T20I series against West Indies. Australia were in trouble, having lost four wickets by the ninth over. His first couple of maximums came off Andre Russell before he clobbered Akeal Hosein for three maximums on the leg-side in one over.

With that, the flow of the game shifted towards Australia. The middle-order batter was dismissed immediately after smashing his sixth six. However, he had fulfilled his job by then. His 40-ball 80-run stand was vital in Australia’s three-wicket victory. Despite conceding 14 runs in the only over he bowled, he picked up the big wicket of Shai Hope (55 off 39) in the first innings.

2. David Warner – 89 off 43 vs South Africa (2009)

David Warner hit his stride against South Africa when he took Makhaya Ntini for runs with a couple of sixes followed by a four. Two back-to-back aggressive shots which went for maximums in Dale Steyn’s first over meant that he had gone past his fifty in just 19 deliveries.

Warner was all set to become the first T20I debutant to register a ton. However, his ferocious display came to an end in the 14th over. He had done enough to get a standing ovation by the jam-packed MCG crowd. Australia posted 182/9 at the end of their 20 overs and ended up winning the clash by 52 runs.

1. Ricky Ponting – 98* off 55 vs New Zealand (2005)

The opening duo of Adam Gilchrist and Michael Clarke had departed by the second over itself to hand over the responsibility to Ricky Ponting and the rest against New Zealand. At one point, the Australian skipper had scored only 40 off 30. Australia were five down an over after Ponting got to his fifty. The penultimate over of the innings by Daryl Tuffey proved to be the most high-octane one.

Ponting went berserk to bludgeon 30 off the medium pacer’s six balls. He ended up just two runs shy of his century by the end of the innings, having faced three deliveries in the 20th over. Australia had set a total of 214/5 on the board. Michael Kasprowicz starred with a four-wicket haul to help his team clean the hosts up for 170 in 20 overs.
