Star opener Devon Conway shared that he was delighted to be back in the T20I squad and contribute meaningfully to New Zealand’s eight-wicket victory in Match 3 of the Zimbabwe T20I Tri-Series 2025. Conway remained unbeaten on 59 off 40 to guide his team over the line in the game on Friday, where the side chased down the target comfortably.

The wicketkeeper-batter also commented on Finn Allen and his foot injury which he sustained in the recently-concluded Major League Cricket, for whom he was drafted into the squad as a replacement player. He was elated to be able to contribute in the team’s victory in his comeback match.

“It’s great to be back in this environment. It’s been a while, so just getting the call-up to come back into the squad is fantastic. Obviously, Finn Allen’s injury is unfortunate, but for me, it’s nice to get that opportunity to be with the squad again and see a couple of faces who I haven’t seen in a long period of time. And it was nice to contribute today to the win,” Conway said at the post-match press conference.

There was a lot of steep bounce in the surface, we adjusted: Conway

The left-handed batter acknowledged the tough batting conditions early on in the chase, which the hosts’ new-ball bowlers made quite good use of. He said that the pace of star Zimbabwe pacer Richard Ngarava initially posed a great challenge to him during the powerplay overs, but once his feet settled in, runs started flowing off the Kiwi batter’s blade.

“There was a lot of steep bounce in the surface, which was a little bit unexpected, but we adjusted, and thankfully we only had to chase 121 and managed to get across the line. With the new ball, especially their left-armer [Richard Ngarava] was a massive challenge for us as batters. They bashed that wicket really hard and got a lot of steep bounce out of it, so it made it pretty hard for us batters early,” he added.

New Zealandstand undefeated currently after two games in. The recent half-century was the southpaw’s 11th in the 20-over format. The BlackCaps claimed a 21-run win against South Africa prior to their match against the hosts. They will play the Proteas next on Tuesday, July 22.
