
Roger Binny was born on July 19, 1955, in Bengaluru and was the first Anglo-Indian of Scottish origin who played for India. His son, Stuart Binny, also represented India at the international level. Binny made his Test debut in 1979 and his ODI debut a year later.
He was a part of the Indian team that won the ODI World Cup in 1983. He was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament and finished with 18 wickets in eight innings at an average of 18.66.
After his heroics, Binny was picked in the next World Cup in 1987 as well and played just one game against Australia in which he took one wicket. It was his last ODI game, and Binny finished with 77 wickets in 72 games at an average of 29.35. He scored 629 runs as well and scored one half-century.
Binny also played 27 Test matches for India and took 47 wickets at an average of 32.63. His best bowling efforts came during a Test match against Pakistan in 1987 at the Eden Gardens. He picked a total of eight wickets in the match and gave away 101 runs.
After retiring from international cricket, Binny returned to coach the Indian Under-19 team at the Under-19 World Cup in 2000. The side had future Indian players like Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif. India won the World Cup that year, and both the batters went on to play for the senior side.
Two years later, Binny went on to coach the Under-16 team and coached future Indian players like Ambati Rayudu, Robin Uthappa, and Irfan Pathan. Binny was appointed the coach of the Bengal cricket team in 2007. He served in the Karnataka State Cricket Association management till he was elected as the national selector in September 2012. He resigned from the position of selector in 2015.
In October 2022, Binny was selected as the president of the BCCI. In 2023, he was appointed chairperson of an eight-member committee for the development of the Women’s Premier League.
