ENG vs IND 2025: 3 reasons why England won 3rd Test

ENG vs IND 2025: 3 reasons why England won 3rd Test

England emerged victorious over India by 22 runs in the third Test of the ongoing five-match series. With the narrow win, they re-claimed the lead after going down by an enormous 336-run margin.

This has set up an interesting remainder of the series in store. Below are three main reasons why the hosts were able to come out on top in what was a truly gripping contest at Lord’s.

1) 84-run eighth-wicket stand between Jamie Smith & Brydon Carse

Brydon Carse joined Jamie Smith in the middle after Chris Woakes was dismissed when the team’s score was 271. In fact, even Jamie had just about arrived at the crease and had already scored a couple of boundaries.

A partnership between the two was the need of the hour for England, which is exactly what ended up happening. Jamie and Carse ended up frustrating the Indian bowlers by adding 84 for the eighth wicket to sway the momentum back towards the hosts.

2) Less than half as many extras conceded as compared to India

England conceded only 30 extras (12 in first innings and 18 in second innings) in total as compared to India’s 63 (31 in first innings and 32 in second innings). Most of these for both sides were via byes and leg-byes.

The margin of victory was 22 runs. The difference between the two ended up being 33. Wicketkeeping proved to be quiet a hard job for both sides due to variable bounce. Jamie’s better performance in contrast to that of Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel proved to be the difference.

3) Early wickets on final day’s play

Although England had picked up four wickets by the end of Day 4, India still held the advantage going into the final day. With 135 runs to be obtained in 90 overs, the contest would have been over had England not struck early.

Wickets of Rishabh Pant (nine off 12), KL Rahul (39 off 58), and Washington Sundar (zero off four) fell within the first seven overs of the day. This laid the ideal foundation for the English bowling unit to seize control over proceedings.
