Most Test centuries at a venue

Test cricket is renowned as the toughest mode of cricket for the batters. Arguably, the biggest achievement for batters in Tests in particular is getting to a ton. Over the course of time, there have been some batters who have developed a special affinity for certain venues. Below is a list of the three batters who have scored the greatest number of Test tons at a particular venue.

1) Mahela Jayawardene (11 at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo)

Mahela Jayawardene played 27 Tests at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo. He had scored 2,921 runs in 42 innings. The SSC holds special memories in Jayawardene’s heart after he registered his highest Test score (374 vs South Africa in 2006).

2) Don Bradman (nine at Melbourne Cricket Ground) and Jacques Kallis (nine at Newlands, Cape Town)

Don Bradman enjoyed an unbelievably high average of 128.53 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the 17 innings played there. Amongst the nine hundreds was a double ton too. Bradman holds the highest century-per-innings percentage (81.81%) at a single venue in Tests among players with 10 or more matches.

Kallis notched up his highest Test score (224 vs Sri Lanka in 2012) at Newlands, a venue where he scored nine tons in 22 Tests (35 innings). The Proteas all-rounder averaged 72.70 in Cape Town.

3) Joe Root (eight at Lord’s) and Kumar Sangakkara (eight at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo)

Joe Root’s latest ton (104 vs India on July 11) meant that he has scored eight Test tons at Lord’s as of July 11. He has scored 2126 runs in 41 innings at a 50-plus average (55.94) so far.

Much like Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara too enjoyed batting at the SSC in Tests. His average was almost similar to that of Jayawardene (74.58 vs 74.89). Sangakkara also posted his highest score at the venue (287) in that same match in which Jayawardane got the aforementioned 374.
