‘Never thought I’d play these many Tests’ – Mitchell Starc looks back on journey ahead of 100th Test

Mitchell Starc shared his sentiments ahead his 100th Test, the third of the three-match series between West Indies and Australia. Starc is all set to represent the nation in his 100th red-ball game almost 14 years since making his debut.

The left-arm pacer felt that approaching this significant landmark made him feel that he has aged quite a bit. “It makes me feel old. I’ve tried to look after my body and find ways through pain barriers to make an impact for the team. I’ve been a player that’s been injured and left the team a man down before – I never wanted to do that again,” stated Starc, as quoted by cricket.com.au.

Starc expressed gratitude to everyone from the coaching staff and his teammates for being by his side and pushing him through during different sorts of challenging moments throughout his career.

“So, finding ways when things weren’t going well, or if I was carrying something, to still be able to push through and finish games and contribute – that’s been important. But I’ve also had a lot of support along the way – from trainers, physios, and teammates who are also my best mates – they’ve all played a part in helping me keep going,” he added.

Never going to go into a game that I don’t believe I can finish: Starc

Starc credited his longevity to his exposure and recognisation of different kinds of pain early on in his career.

“There are a few scars and sore bits most days. Whether it’s jabs or painkillers along the way, I’ve learnt what I can and can’t push through. I’m never going to go into a game that I don’t believe I can finish. You learn the difference between good pain, bad pain, and general soreness. All of that shapes a young fast bowler – I had to figure it out pretty early on, or I probably wouldn’t have lasted this long,” remarked Starc.

After Glenn McGrath, Starc is just the second bowler who would have played in 100 Tests for Australia. The Pat Cummins-led unit will be keen on inflicting a whitewash on West Indies in the upcoming Test in Jamaica.
