Sanjay Manjrekar was one of the highly talented players who could not replicate their success from domestic cricket quite at the international level. The former Indian cricketer had great numbers in First Class cricket, where he scored 10252 runs in 147 matches at an average of 55.11.
However, his numbers in Test cricket were not at the same level, as he scored 2043 runs in 37 matches at an average of 37.14, with a best score of 218. Despite having high potential, Manjrekar could not do justice to his talent. However, when at his best, he could play quality knocks and help his side win matches.
Here are the top 3 performances of Sanjay Manjrekar in Tests –
218(401) against Pakistan, 3rd Test of the 1989 series, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore
It was a flat deck in Lahore with little to nothing for the bowlers. Batting first, India scored 509, thanks to Manjrekar’s 218(401). He got a bit of support at the other end from Ravi Shastri and Mohammad Azharuddin. In reply, Pakistan scored 699/5, as the match ended in a pale draw.
3(14) and 113*(243) against Pakistan, 1st Test of the 1989 series, National Stadium, Karachi
In the first Test of the same series, Manjrekar scored a ton in a tougher batting surface. Against a quality bowling attacking featuring Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Abdul Qadir, and Waqar Younis, Manjrekar scored 3(14) in the first innings and an unbeaten 113*(243) in the second innings. The match, however, ended in a draw.
108(221) and 3(12) against the West Indies, 2nd Test of the 1988/89 series, Kensington Oval, Bridgetown
Manjrekar played the best knock of his career against an attack consisting of Ian Bishop, Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose, and Courtney Walsh. The former Indian batter scored 108(221) in the first innings and 3(12) in the second innings. Unfortunately, India lost the Test by eight wickets.
