Flashback - India’s first Test at Lord’s

India are taking on England at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground this week in the third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025. The series is intriguingly poised at 1-1, and both teams would want to take the lead heading into the last couple of games.

Many fans wonder when the first-ever Test match between these two teams at Lord’s was played and who emerged victorious. In June 1932, India travelled to England to play a one-off Test match at the historic venue. This was the first time India played a Test at Lord’s.

England captain Douglas Jardine and wicketkeeper Les Ames scored half-centuries in the first innings, but Mohammad Nissar bagged a five-for as the hosts were bowled out for 259. In reply, four out of India’s top-four batters got starts but failed to convert them into substantial scores. India captain C.K. Nayudu top-scored with 40 runs to his name. However, the lower-order failed to contribute much as the visitors were bowled out for 189. Bill Bowes and Bill Voce picked up four and three wickets, respectively.

In England’s second innings, Jardine led from the front yet again, as he scored an unbeaten 85. Eddie Paynter gave good support to his skipper after the hosts lost four wickets for 67 runs at one stage. Later, Walter Robins and Freddie Brown made useful contributions down the order before England declared at 275/8 as Jahangir Khan accounted for four wickets.

India were asked to chase down a 346-run target in the fourth innings. Naoomal Jeoomal and Syed Wazir Ali showed patience but could not score big while Lall Singh also failed to capitalise on his start. Amar Singh, batting at No. 9, top-scored with 51 before India were bowled out for 187. Wally Hammond was the star performer for England, picking up three wickets for just nine runs in 5.3 overs as the home side won the match by 158 runs.
