I hope Shubman Gill breaks Bradman’s record of most runs in a Test series: Dilip Vengsarkar

Former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar has suggested Shubman Gill to focus on his own game and not get too carried away with breaking an age-long record Sir Donald Bradman has held in Test cricket for almost a century now. Gill, who has registered 585 runs in just four innings in the ongoing series, has the opportunity of going past Australian legend Bradman’s tally of 974 runs which he scored in the Ashes in 1930.

While Vengsarkar expected and hoped Gill made the record of scoring the most runs in a bilateral series his own, he did not want it to become his most important motive. Vengsarkar wanted Gill to keep his team’s objectives in front of him.

“I hope he does that. I don’t know whether he will do it, but I am sure that he has got an opportunity. He is in great form, and he should do it, that’s what I feel. But then, what is important is not (getting into chasing) personal milestones. Because we are obsessed with personal milestones, which is wrong. The important (point) is to win matches for our country; that is what matters. The impact of an innings or a spell is what matters in the ultimate analysis,” stated Vengsarkar, as quoted by NDTV Sports.

The former India top-order batter also went onto compliment Gill and his teammates for playing the way they have despite the seasoned campaigners of the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli not being available to guide them along the way.

“He is an experienced player. He is a world-class batter, and he has showed that in England. Because of the English conditions, everybody was thinking about what will happen to the Indian team in the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. But these young players have shown that they are capable of doing it, and I am very proud of them,” he added.

The third Test between England and India will be played at Lord’s. The Gill-led unit handed a 336-run drubbing to the hosts in the second game of the series. They would be aiming to carry forward the impetus and potentially gain a lead going into the final couple of matches.
