Sunil Gavaskar’s top 3 performances in ODIs

Sunil Gavaskar is popularly known for his exploits in ODIs. While he was not as accomplished in the shorter format as he was in the longer one, Gavaskar showed his ability to adapt to ODIs and performed well in the last few years of his career. He was a part of the Indian team that won the ODI World Cup in 1983.

Gavaskar won some matches for India against the top teams in the world. In 108 ODIs, he scored 3092 runs at an average of 35.14, including a hundred and 27 fifties to his name. Gavaskar could take on the best bowlers in the world and make the life of other batters easier.

Here are the top 3 ODI knocks of Sunil Gavaskar –

71(87) against England, 3rd ODI of the 1982 series, Barabati Stadium, Cuttack

In a rain-affected game, Gavaskar laid a great platform to a tricky chase. Batting first, England posted 230 runs on the board in their 46 overs. Chasing the target, the right-handed batter scored 71(87) against an attack consisting of Bob Willis, Ian Botham, John Lever, and Derek Underwood. India won the match by five wickets with four overs to spare.

103*(88) against New Zealand, Match 24, ODI World Cup 1987, Nagpur

It was the last group stage match of India in the ODI World Cup 1987 against New Zealand. Bowling first, India restricted the Kiwis to 221/9, thanks to Chetan Dharma’s hat-trick. Chasing 222, Gavaskar went berserk and scored an unbeaten 103*(88), which helped India to win the match by nine wickets.

90(117) against the West Indies, 2nd ODI of 1983 series, Guyana

It was the second ODI of the series between India and the West Indies just before the ODI World Cup 1983. In a rain-affected game, India batted first and scored 282/5 in their 47 overs. Gavaskar scored 90(117) against an attack consisting of Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Malcolm Marshall, Winston Davis, and Larry Gomes, as India won by 27 runs.
