On this day, Sunil Gavaskar was born in 1949

The legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra on July 10 1949. Right from a young age, Gavaskar had a special interest in cricket and went on to become one of the legends of the game, as he is regarded among the finest batters of all time, especially in Test cricket.

Gavaskar made his Test debut in 1971 against the West Indies in their backyard and scored 774 runs in four Tests, which is the most for a batter in a Test series on debut. He broke many such records in Tests, such as having most Test hundreds and runs by the time of his retirement. He was the first batter to score over 10000 runs in Tests.

Gavaskar faced some of the greatest bowlers of all time, such as Dennis Lillee, Jeff Thomson, Richard Hadlee, Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Joel Garner, Colin Croft, Malcolm Marshall, Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Ian Botham, Bob Willis, and others, and achieved great legacy.

He was a part of the Indian team that won the ODI World Cup in 1983. The star player was not as successful in ODIs as he was in Tests. Yet, in the last few years of his career, Gavaskar showed great ability to adapt to the then shortest format of the game.

The right-handed batter retired from all forms of the game in 1987. He played 125 Tests and scored 10122 runs at an average of 51.1. In ODIs, he scored 3092 runs in 108 matches at an average of 35.1. After his retirement, Gavaskar has been active as a commentator and broadcaster.
