Shubman Gill created history during the second Test against England at Edgbaston, entering a distinguished list of batters with four 100-plus stands in a single Test.

His fourth century stand came with Ravindra Jadeja for the fifth wicket in India’s second innings. With this, he became only the fifth batter in Test history to attain such a feat. Gill had a record-breaking game, scoring 269 off 387 and 161 off 162 in the first and second innings, respectively. He also became the fifth batter to aggregate over 400 runs in a Test match.

Batters involved in four 100-plus partnerships in a Test (as of July 5, 2025):

Player Opposition Venue Year
Hanif Mohammad West Indies Bridgetown 1958
Graham Gooch India Lord’s 1990
Mark Taylor Pakistan Peshawar 1998
Joe Root Pakistan Old Trafford 2016
Shubman Gill England Edgbaston 2025

Gill’s rcentury partnerships in the Test were as follows: 203 off 279 with Jadeja (first innings), 144 off 189 with Washington Sundar (first innings), 110 off 103 with Rishabh Pant (second innings), and 175 off 208 with Jadeja (second innings).

Gill created another record in the second innings, as his tally of 11 sixes in this Test has only been exceeded by Rohit Sharma (13 vs South Africa in Visakhapatnam in 2019) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (12 vs England in Rajkot in 2024) amongst Indian cricketers. He was finally dismissed on 161 off 162 in the second innings after he lobbed up an opportunity for Shoaib Bashir to pounce on.

India declared their second innings not long after Gill departed as Jadeja and Sundar remained unbeaten on 69 and 12, respectively. The visitors’ second innings total read 427/6d in 83 overs. England now require an improbable 608 for victory. It would be crucial for the Indians to get a few wickets for the final day to be an intriguing one.
