WI vs AUS 2025: Steve Smith provides update on finger injury ahead of second Test

Steve Smith recently provided an update on his finger injury and a status on his recovery ahead of Australia’s second Test of the ongoing three-match series against West Indies. He shared that he was confident of making it to the XI for the upcoming game.

For the unversed, the veteran batter dislocated his finger while attempting a catch in the slips during the summit clash of the 2023-25 cycle of the World Test Championship against Australia at Lord’s. He was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Smith did not end up requiring surgery. However, he missed the opening Test of the tour of West Indies.

“For me, it’ll just feel like training as normal, I think. I don’t really feel any pain or anything. (It’s) just getting used to the splint on and the slight limited movement. It’s not too bad, I’ve got a lot of movement there now, so that feels good. Hitting the ball felt completely fine,” stated Smith, as quoted by ICC.

Smith also shared that he will most probably not field in his conventional fielding position, in the slip cordon.

“Fielding some balls in front of the wicket will probably be the strangest thing for me, I don’t think I’ve ever done that in a Test match. Fielding at either probably mid-on or mid-off or fine leg, is a bit different to standing at the second or first slip,” added Smith.

If Smith is cleared of his injury by the management, then osh Inglis will most likely sit out. Inglis did not have the best of outings in the first Test which Australia won by 159 runs. He scored five and 12 in his side’s first and second innings, respectively.
