Glenn Maxwell is set to lead Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket 2025. While Steve Smith led Washington in their title-winning campaign in 2024, Maxwell has been announced as the leader ahead of the 2025 edition of the league due to Smith’s limited availability for the tournament due to national commitments.

Notably, Maxwell, who recently announced his ODI retirement, has some leadership experience under his belt, having led Melbourne Stars at Big Bash League (BBL) in 65 matches, winning 34 wins and losing 30 with one no result. He was also the skipper of the Punjab Kings in the IPL 2017, where he had seven wins in 14 matches and narrowly missed out on the playoffs berth.

“Captain Maxwell is here to rewrite the script. Glenn Maxwell will lead the Freedom squad in Cognizant Major League Cricket 2025. Steve Smith will captain the side in the two games he plays during the season. #FreedomExpress #MLC2025,” announced the franchise on X.
