SWOT Analysis of India’s Bowling Lineup

SWOT Analysis of India's Bowling Lineup

Team India are going to play England on June 7th. They are kicking off the practice for a five-match Test series, marking the beginning of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27. This forthcoming series also signals the start of the new Indian cricket team after Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirements.

Shubman Gill, who now takes over as a full-time Test skipper, leads the side with several new players. Many bowlers would be aiming to mark their impact against the in-form England batting unit. Speaking about the same subject, given below is the SWOT analysis of the Indian bowling team.

Strength:

India’s bowling strength is largely attributed to Jasprit Bumrah. The single biggest threat to the English batters would be the leader of the attack, who has been insane in Tests since returning. In 2024, he claimed 71 wickets at an average of under 15 and a strike rate of close to 30, which is astonishing. Bumrah alone is equivalent to 2-3 quality bowlers.

Weakness:

While the unorthodox bowler has been India’s go-to man to claim wickets, bowlers at the other end have let him down lately. While Mohammed Siraj is inconsistent, other bowlers haven’t established themselves on the Test side. The challenge would be to field a bowling attack that can claim 20 wickets every Test and outbowl the opponents.

Opportunity:

As mentioned, the Indian bowling unit lacks a great supportive unit for Bumrah. The series against England provides a great opportunity for the likes of Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, and others to prove their worth and establish themselves in the Test lineup.

Threat:

Indian bowlers will face the wrath of the English batters, whose batting style, popularly known as Bazball, is certain to challenge them. It will be interesting to see if the Indian bowlers are capable of dismissing the aggressive batters for a consistent period twice in all 5 Tests of the series.
