3 reasons why Mumbai Indians lost to Punjab Kings in IPL 2025

3 reasons why Mumbai Indians lost to Punjab Kings in IPL 2025

The Mumbai Indians suffered a seven-wicket defeat against the Punjab Kings in the 69th game of the IPL 2025, which took place on May 26th at Sawai Mansingh Stadium. The win in this game might put them in the top two spots, but they will be playing the Eliminator Clash.

The MI posted 184/7 in the given 20 overs of the game. However, the Shreyas Iyer-led side chased down the total with nine balls to spare. Given below are the three major reasons that showcase why MI suffered defeat against PBKS in their last game of the league stages.

1. Slow start from openers

MI’s openers did not have a good time in the middle. While wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton scored 27 runs off 20 balls, Rohit Sharma made 24 runs after playing 21 balls at a strike rate of 114.29. Together, the duo could not make the most of the Powerplay overs and did not help their team. This slow start was one of the major reasons for their defeat in this clash.

2. Posting a below-par total

MI posted 184/7 in their 20 overs, which was about 20-25 under par. The surface in Jaipur seemed good to bat on. However, MI failed to accelerate for a long time. Most of their batters got a start and could not convert them into big ones. The batters could have batted for long hours. This score didn’t put any pressure on the host bowlers.

3. Inability to break the partnership between Josh Inglis and Priyansh Arya

It won’t be wrong to say that the turning point of the match was the partnership between Josh Inglis and Priyansh Arya. They built a 109-run stand for the second wicket off just 59 balls, which sealed the game for the Punjab Kings. While Arya scored 62(35), Inglis played the best IPL knock of his career and scored 73(42) to win the POTM award. The five-time IPL champions, boasting a strong bowling squad in the IPL 2025, could not break their partnership in time.
