The highly anticipated clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders was washed out due to persistent showers, resulting in the points being shared between the two sides. While RCB inched one step closer to the playoffs, it was all but over for the defending champions as far as their hopes for qualification were concerned.

Notably, the Chinnaswamy stadium saw many supporters turning up in white attire – shirts, T-shirts, jerseys, etc. This was not a mere coincidence. A few days ago, there was a viral appeal that circulated across social media for the crowd attending the RCB-KKR game to turn up in white in a symbolic gesture to pay homage to the legacy of Virat Kohli‘s Test career.

However, Kohli was nowhere to be seen acknowledging the supporters who had packed the venue and remained for hours despite the prolonged rainfall. There are a couple of reasons associated with it. The main reason behind this is due to the relentless rainfall due to which Kohli could not really step out of the dugout. Another point to note is that the majority of the crowd had left the ground before the match was called off (after which there was a significant decrease in precipitation).

Kohli hung up his boots from the longest format of the game on May 12. The sudden announcement took the cricket fraternity by surprise. This is because many experts and reports have come out that Kohli would be all set to represent India in the upcoming five-match Test series against England. There was a lot of nostalgia surrounding the former Test skipper’s retirement, who was unfortunately just another Indian cricketer to bow out of the format without a farewell match.

Although RCB haven’t officially booked their berth in the playoffs, a defeat incurred by Punjab Kings or Delhi Capitals on Sunday, May 18, would result in the franchise landing a top-four finish. RCB currently sit at the top of the table with 17 points in 12 games.
