Heartbreak at the Crease: When the Highest PSL Scores Ended in a Run-Out

There’s no worse way to end a masterclass inning than by being run out. It’s the cricketing equivalent of tripping right before the finish line. And when does it happen after scoring a big hundred? That’s just next-level heartbreak. In the fast-paced world of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where every ball counts and every run matters, some batters have dazzled us with stunning centuries, only to be cut short in the most frustrating way possible.

1. Sharjeel Khan’s 117

Sharjeel Khan scored 117

Back in February 2016, Sharjeel Khan was on fire. Representing Islamabad United against Peshawar Zalmi at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, he played one of the most destructive knocks the PSL had ever seen. Smacking 12 fours and 8 massive sixes, Sharjeel raced to 117 off just 62 balls at a scorching strike rate of 188.70. His timing was flawless; his intent was ruthless, and it felt like he was batting on a different pitch.

But just as fans started dreaming of an even bigger score, disaster struck. A mix-up led to Sharjeel being run out—his epic innings brought to a screeching halt. That run-out not only cut short a potentially record-shattering knock, but it also highlighted one of cricket’s cruelest twists: the game doesn’t care how well you’re playing—one bad call, and it’s all over. Even today, his 117 remains the highest individual PSL score that ended in a run-out.

2. Babar Azam’s 115

Babar Azam scored 115

Fast forward to March 2023. Babar Azam, sometimes referred to as the ‘Prince of Timing’, produced a batting masterclass in Rawalpindi over Peshawar Zalmi against Quetta Gladiators. He navigated his way to a sublime 115 off 65 balls, with 15 boundaries and 3 sixes. His strike rate of 176.92 was electric, but in his classy style.

Here’s the kicker: Babar didn’t get run out from those innings. He was not out, but he is included here to lend perspective. Imagine if those innings had ended by a run out; that would have been truly disastrous. Babar’s innings demonstrated what the elderly and still finish could look like and just how painful Sharjeel’s run out in contrast.

3. Kamran Akmal’s 104

Kamran Akmal has proven to be one of PSL’s most destructive batters, and his 104 against Karachi Kings in March 2017 was a classic case in point. Batting for Peshawar Zalmi, Kamran scored his hundred off just 65 balls and struck 6 four and 7 sixes in that inning while mercilessly peppering the boundary. It was an all-out assault; there was no holding back, in a classic Akmal fashion.

While Kamran wasn’t run out in this match either, his innings ended just after reaching the town, and it had the feeling that there was still more carnage left in the tank. Had a run-out cut his fireworks short, the sense of “what could’ve been” would have been even heavier. It’s a reminder of how timing, both in Strokeplay and running between the wickets, can define a legacy.

In the PSL, where momentum swings in seconds, even the most blazing of innings can meet a bitter end. Sharjeel Khan’s 117 is a haunting reminder of that truth—a record-setting, jaw-dropping innings that could’ve been historic, but was undone by a single mistake in calling. As fans, we cheer the boundaries and celebrate the milestones—but it’s the sudden heartbreaks, like a run-out after a century, that stay with us.
