Gujarat Titans’ skipper Shubman Gill once again was impressive with the bat but was dismissed via a controversial runout during their IPL 2025 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Ahmedabad on Friday. Gill, who looked on the road for a big hundred, fell for 76 off 38 balls after a tough third umpire call.

With SRH walking into the fixture needing a win to stay alive in the playoff race, Pat Cummins opted to bowl first. Gujarat, meanwhile, sat comfortably in the top half of the table with 12 points and were eyeing a top-two finish. GT’s openers came out all guns blazing, registering their best-ever powerplay score of 82 for no loss. Gill and his opening partner, B Sai Sudharsan, made sure to give a solid start with the latter scripting history by becoming the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 T20 runs. Sudharsan’s cameo of 48 off 23 balls included nine boundaries.

After Sudharsan departed in the seventh over, Gill continued to anchor the innings, reaching his half-century in just 25 balls. Meanwhile, the controversial incident took place in the 13th over, when Jos Buttler pushed for a single after hitting towards short fine leg. However, Harshal Patel displayed brilliance with a direct throw to the keeper’s end, where Heinrich Klaasen stretched out his glove to complete the run-out, leaving Gill short of his crease.

Watch the video below:

After consulting with the 3rd umpire, replays showed the ball brushed Klaasen’s glove before dislodging the stumps. The third umpire took several angles and frames before confirming that the deflection of the ball indicated it hit the stumps before any glove contact caused the bails to fall. Gill was angry with the call made and engaged in a heated exchange with the fourth umpire after returning to the dugout. By the 19th over, GT’s scorecard read at 212/3, with Shahrukh Khan and Washington Sundar at the crease.
