I barely slept the night before my debut for Mumbai Indians: Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav opened up on his IPL debut ahead of the match between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals today. The MI batter claimed he hardly slept the night before his IPL debut for MI due to excitement.

The Indian captain claimed he enjoyed the incredible moment and felt nervous after stepping onto the field.

“I barely slept the night before my debut for Mumbai Indians – went to bed around 4 or 5 in the morning. There was so much excitement. Playing for a franchise brings a different kind of buzz. I was just enjoying the moment, thinking about stepping onto the field for warm-up and as soon as I did, I was already sweating. It felt really good,” Suryakumar said.

Ahead of IPL 2012, Yadav had a good season for Mumbai in domestic cricket, which earned him a spot in the MI squad. The star batter got a chance to play for them against Pune Warriors India, which did not go well for him though.

Marlon Samuels dismissed the right-handed batter for a four-ball duck in the only match of the season that he played. He did not get a chance to play for the rest of the season in 2012 or in the following season in 2013. MI released him ahead of the 2014 season, which was a blessing in disguise for Kolkata Knight Riders.

KKR bought him in the IPL auction for 2014 and the star player was an integral part in their second title win. He played for the Kolkata-based franchise from 2014 to 2017, mostly as a finisher. The three-time champions released Yadav ahead of the IPL 2018.

MI did not make the mistake they did in Yadav’s first stint with them. They bought him in the 2018 season and haven’t left him since then. Suryakumar played a key role for MI in their back-to-back title wins in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
