Bangladesh have earned a decent lead despite Zimbabwe spirited bowling performance in the last session of second day of the Chattogram Test. The game hangs in the balance as Zimbabwe have kept the fight alive with big breakthroughs in the game.

After resuming the day on 227/9, it did not take time for the last Zimbabwean wicket as they were dismissed without adding anything to their tally. Bangladesh started well and looked threatening in the first two sessions as the visitors struggled with their lines and lengths. Openers Shadman Islam and Anamul Haque added 118 for the first wicket before the latter was trapped lbw by Blessing Muzarabani for 39.

Mominul Haque joined hands with Shadman as the duo added a solid 76 for the second wicket. Despite the great start, the visiting team did not give up as they went on to dent the hosts in the last session as the batters could not convert their starts. Bangladesh slipped from 194 for 1 to 194 for as Mominul and Shadman fell in quick succession.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Najmul Hossain Shanto held the fort for a while as they added 65 runs for the fourth wicket but Zimbabwe fought back as Bangladesh collapsed again, losing four wickets for jusr 20 runs. The Chevrons still have an uphill task as Bangladesh have a lead of 64 runs and ended the day at 291 for 7 with Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam at the crease.

Shadman Islam’s century makes a difference

Though Bangladesh will be happy that they got the lead, they would not be entirely pleased with their performance with the bat. Shadman was the only one who went on to play a big knock, bringing up his second Test hundred, scoring 120 off 181.

Zimbabwe had their moments with the ball as debutant leg spinner Vincent Masekesa impressed the most, making three crucial breakthroughs to give his team a fighting chance. He finished the day with figures of 3/44 in the 14 overs.
