CSK’s hopes of qualification to the knockout stage of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2025 faced the final dent as they lost to SRH by 5 wickets in a must-win game. The game was played at CSK’s home ground, the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, on Friday, April 25. The visiting skipper, Pat Cummins, won the toss and asked CSK to bat first. Batting first, the hosts were bundled out at the score of 154 runs in 19.5 overs.
While defending the target, CSK bowlers failed to get the better of SRH batters in the second half of the game. The visitors chased down the target in 18.4 overs, scoring 155 runs for the loss of 5 wickets and winning the game by 5 wickets to hand CSK their seventh defeat in the tournament’s current season.
With that said, here we’ll have a look at the 3 reasons why CSK lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 43rd game of IPL 2025.
Middle Order Collapse
In what seemed to be a shaky start, CSK lost their first wicket on the very first ball of the game. Here onwards, teenage batter Ayush Mhatre scored a quick 30 runs off 19 balls, with six fours. However, wickets kept falling at regular intervals in the middle order, except Dewald Brevis’ knock of 42 runs off just 25, with one four and four sixes.
CSK had lost their 4 wickets at the score of just 74 runs in 9.3 overs, followed by another collapse in the middle order and losing 9 wickets at the score of just 137 runs in 18.1 overs. This middle-order collapse pushed CSK away from posting a big total to defend in the second innings and it happened to be one of the major reasons behind their defeat.
Poor bowling
Besides their middle-order batting collapse in the first innings, CSK’s poor bowling in the second innings was also a big reason behind their debacle and downfall in the game against SRH. They were looking at the front foot, scalping SRH’s 3 wickets at 54 runs in 8.1 overs, but they failed to capitalise on this start.
Eventually, the SRH batters kept scoring runs, especially the star number three batter Ishan Kishan and all-rounder Kamindu Mendis, as they scored 44 and 32 runs, respectively. They managed to charge the CSK bowlers throughout the second innings and helped SRH to chase down the 155-run target in 18.4 overs.
Lack of intent on the field
Apart from the miserable batting and bowling performances in the first and second innings, what mainly happened to cost CSK this game against SRH was the lack of intent on the field. It was the sheer lack of intent that was visible among the CSK players while defending the target against SRH in the second innings. It was also reflected in CSK’s batting in the first innings, especially in the death overs.
In the second innings, CSK fielders made some mistakes that gave an edge to SRH batters to dominate the bowlers and gradually head towards the run chase. The sheer lack of intent on the field can also be counted as one of the three reasons behind CSK’s defeat against SRH in Chennai.
