‘If I became a Sardar, nobody will recognise me’ – Sourav Ganguly reveals story behind disguised attire during Durga Puja

‘If I became a Sardar, nobody will recognise me’ – Sourav Ganguly reveals story behind disguised attire during Durga Puja (Source: Twitter/x)

Former cricketer Sourav Ganguly revealed an interesting story behind his disguise during Durga Puja in a cooking show called ‘Sourav Ganguly’s Special Recipe with Sanjyot Keer.’ Sanjyot, who is a celebrity chef, has a YouTube channel where he shares his cooking recipes and Ganguly was invited as a guest speaker, and he opened up about several incidents in his life.

The interesting part was that he turned into a Sikh get-up to enjoy the Durga Puja immersion, which is extremely fascinating, especially in West Bengal. Being a renowned personality, going into a crowded place would have attracted the attention of all the people around him, which the Kolkata-based cricketer surely did not want to happen.

Hence, to stay away from the public eye, he turned into a Sikh and went to watch the religious ceremony with his family. However, his disguise didn’t last long, as people around him recognized him even after wearing different attire. The former cricketer was in quite an amused state while revealing the story to the host.

“There was a little competition with my daughter. I said if I become a sardar, people will not be able to recognize me and she said they will still recognize you. So in the photo, I had become a Sikh and went to Maa Durga’s immersion. As soon as I entered the car, the police first recognized me. There were a lot of police there. He said, whatever you do, people will recognize you,” he revealed.

“Your car will go straight, so I went straight ahead. I went there, I got down and stood there. Initially, people didn’t recognize me because no one expected me. I told my wife to not say anything. My wife came and said, ‘This looks very good on you.’ The person behind me caught her. My daughter started laughing,” the former India captain added.

Currently, Sourav Ganguly is the Chair of the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee and has also been involved with Delhi Capitals Women in the WPL, where they ended runners-up in the recently-concluded 2025 edition.
