3 reasons why RR lost to GT

The Rajasthan Royals suffered a crushing defeat against the Gujarat Titans in the 23rd game of the Indian Premier League 2025, which took place on April 9 at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. The 2022 IPL champions posted a huge total of 217/6 in the given 20 overs, thanks to the stellar batting display on their home turf. However, the visitors were just able to rack up 159 runs before being bundled out in 19.2 overs of the game and lost the game by 58 runs.

GT’s 2nd and 3rd wicket partnerships

GT had to survive a fiery opening spell from star pacer Jofra Archer, who dismissed Shubman Gill with a peach and made early inroads into GT’s batting. What followed was a couple of great partnerships for the 2nd and 3rd wickets, respectively. From 14/1 after 2.1 overs, GT found themselves at 156/2 after 15.3 overs.

Lack of big partnerships

While GT had two match-defining partnerships, RR lacked them. There were a couple of decent partnerships where Sanju Samson got a bit of support from Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer, respectively. However, their impact wasn’t enough for RR’s win. Compared to their innings, GT had good contributions from many batters, while RR’s batting unit failed to step up when needed the most.

Huge batting collapse

After 12.1 overs, RR was 116/4 and looked very much in the run chase with a set Samson and Hetmyer in the middle. From there, RR lost their next six wickets for just 43 runs. This showcases their inability to handle the pressure. Prasidh Krishna and the spinners ensured RR didn’t recover from the fall of wickets. A better performance from the lower middle-order batters could’ve helped RR.
