‘It was a disappointing series’ – Mohammad Rizwan reflects on ODI series whitewash against New Zealand

'It was a disappointing series' - Mohammad Rizwan reflects on ODI series whitewash against New Zealand

New Zealand won the third and final ODI against Pakistan by 43 runs at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, on Saturday, April 5. It was a complete whitewash for Pakistan in the three-match ODI series after losing the T20Is by 4-1. After a humiliating performance in the white-ball series against the Kiwis, skipper Mohammad Rizwan went on to reflect on the performance at the post-match presentation.

Rizwan spoke about the team, their mistakes, and how they can rectify them. Following that, he also said he looks forward to the PSL. The tournament starts on April 11, and the player hoped to have a good time in the league. Rizwan has been under scrutiny for not leading the team well. First, it was the Champions Trophy 2025, where Pakistan had an early exit from the tournament, and now it’s the New Zealand series. Out of the eight games in total on the tour, Pakistan could only win one.

“It’s a disappointing series. We need to play better against new ball. We will go back and discuss whatever we have learned from here. We are going to enjoy PSL; it’s a big tournament for us. We couldn’t do well in the Champions trophy (and the series here). hopefully, we will do well in PSL,” said Mohammad Rizwan during the post-match presentation.

The third game was reduced to 42 overs per side due to rain. Pakistan won the toss and opted to bowl first. The decision might have turned into regret, as Rhys Mariu (58 off 61) and Henry Nicholls (31 off 40) slammed a 78-run partnership after Nick Kelly was dismissed on just three runs. Captain Michael Bracewell smashed a 40-ball 59, helping the Kiwis post a competitive total on the board.

Chasing 265 runs, Pakistan’s middle order didn’t support them much. However, Babar Azam scored a half-century, while Rizwan chipped in with 37 runs off 32 balls. Eventually, the visitors fell short of 43 runs. Ben Sears, with his magical bowling, claimed a fifer, helping New Zealand clinch the series.
