In the recent IPL 2025 game between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), MI owner Akash Ambani’s angry reaction to a decision by skipper Hardik Pandya grabbed the attention. Despite Pandya’s all-round heroics, Mumbai suffered their third away defeat of the season, falling 12 runs short in the run chase at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Friday, April 4.

The five-time IPL champions have had a rough start to their 2025 campaign, managing just one win in four games. Having opted to bowl first, Pandya produced a sensational performance with the ball, claiming his maiden T20 five-wicket haul and becoming the first captain in IPL history to achieve the feat. His efforts, however, were not enough to restrict the home from posting 203 on the board.

The real talking point came in the final over of MI’s chase. Needing 22 off six balls, the all-rounder who had the role to finish things off with the bat began the over with a six off Avesh Khan. But on the third and fourth deliveries of the over, the 31-year-old refused to take singles despite clear opportunities, keeping strike and denying new batter Mitchell Santner a chance to face. However, cameras caught Ambani visibly frustrated at Pandya’s decision to opt to take the responsibility alone.

This came right after MI had made the bold call to ‘retire out’ Tilak Varma and send in Santner in the penultimate over. The Kiwi managed a double off the last ball of the 19th over but was at the non-striker’s end during the final over. Earlier, Mitchell Marsh’s 60 in the powerplay and a fifty by Aiden Markram gave LSG a solid start. In reply, MI fought hard with knocks from Naman Dhir and Suryakumar Yadav, but Digvesh Rathi’s spell and Avesh Khan’s final over sealed the win for Lucknow.
