BCCI upgrades roles and responsibilities of fourth umpires in IPL

Ahead of the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) organized a meeting with the captains, coaches, and managers on March 20 to announce the upgrade of a few rules and regulations in the tournament. This time, the Board expanded the roles and responsibilities of the fourth umpires who will be a part of every game. The fourth umpires operate outside the field, giving attention to important matters.

Now, the umpires can check the bats of the players, not only during the game but also during the practice sessions. There are instances where players retire to the dugout in between the games, especially the bowlers. Several bowlers retire to the dugout after every over. The fourth umpires will have to keep a stern check on these matters as well.

Apart from these responsibilities, the fourth umpires shall also act as emergency third umpires when required during the games. They will keep a close eye on the people who are entering the pitch area before the start of the game. Only authorized staff, the IPL match officials, players, team coaches, and authorized television personnel are allowed to look at the pitch. Also, the fourth umpire will be responsible for carrying a box of six new balls and selecting them for the game.

“The 4th Umpire is an important member of the team, the voice of the PCT at the boundary. Players are requested not to approach the 4th Umpire for any grievance against a decision. The 4th Umpire is empowered to check bats at any time on matchdays & practice days. They will be monitoring those bowlers who have left the field after finishing their bowling quota & those players who are habitual offenders of leaving the field to take rest,” said a note by BCCI during the meeting.
