Team India’s star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant recently recreated Sunil Gavaskar’s famous ‘Stupid, Stupid, Stupid’ commentary rant ahead of IPL 2025. Pant tried to imitate the legendary cricketer’s words, and the video quickly went viral.

The original incident took place during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). On Day 3, Pant attempted his iconic scoop shot against Australian pacer Scott Boland despite the fielder being stationed in the deep. The shot resulted in a leading edge, creating an easy catch to Nathan Lyon at third man, breaking a crucial 32-run partnership between him and Ravindra Jadeja.

The southpaw repeated a similar mistake in the fourth innings, playing an unnecessary pull shot off part-time bowler Travis Head, which triggered a collapse. India, who were in the position to draw the Test, lost seven wickets in a session, leading to a disappointing defeat. Gavaskar, who was on commentary at that time, expressed his frustration, calling Pant’s shot selection ‘stupid’ and criticizing his approach.

“Stupid, Stupid, STUPID! You’ve got two fielders there, and you still go for that. You missed the previous shot, and look where you’ve been caught. That is throwing away your wicket. You cannot say that is your natural game. I’m sorry. That is not your natural game. This is a stupid shot. This is letting your team down badly. You have to understand the situation as well,” Gavaskar said during commentary on ABC Sport.

Meanwhile, Pant mimicked the legendary batter’s words during an ad shoot. In the video, he replicated the rant, eventually laughing at his attempt.

We want to create a place where people can come and express themselves: Rishabh Pant

Notably, Pant became the most expensive player in the history of IPL. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) acquired him for a whopping INR 27 crore. His former team, Delhi Capitals (DC), could not retain him due to the high bid. In a recently posted video by LSG, Pant was seen addressing his teammates, mentioning the importance of creating unity in the squad.

“I feel there is a lot of experience in the group. I think management has a lot of experience, we have a lot of senior players. Keep sharing your experience with the younger guys and let that experience flow into the younger group. We want to create a place where people can come and express themselves. It’s easier to say than to do it because it requires a lot of effort from each & every individual. It’s not just the management. I think it’s because of the players. We can create that environment. What I’ve always felt is that if you back your players and give them enough trust, they can perform at any level,” Pant told his LSG teammates.
