Mahmudullah retires from international cricket

Bangladesh’s senior all-rounder, Mahmudullah, has recently announced his retirement from international cricket via a social media post on Wednesday, March 12. The 39-year-old represented Bangladesh in 430 international matches.

The seasoned campaigner represented Bangladesh in 50 Tests, 239 ODIs, and 141 T20Is. Apart from the many individual milestones he has achieved as a player during his cricketing days, he stands out as the only Bangladesh player to have registered three tons in 50-over World Cups; a couple of them coming in 2015 and one in 2023.

Mahmudullah had recently requested the Bangladesh Cricket Board to not consider him while shortlisting players for the central contract beyond March 2025. The selection panel of the BCB had classified the all-rounder in the Grade B category in the proposed central contract list for 2025.

“I have decided to retire from international cricket. I would like to thank all of my teammates, coaches & specially my fans who have always supported me. A big thank you to my parents, my in-laws specially my father-in-law & most importantly, my brother Emdad Ullah, who has been there for me constantly since my childhood as my coach & mentor,” read the social media post uploaded by Mahmudullah on Facebook.

“And finally, thanks to my wife & kids who have been my support system through thick & thin. I know Raeid will miss me in red & green jersey. Not everything comes to an end in a perfect way but you say yes & move forward. PEACE……….. Best wishes to my team & Bangladesh cricket,” the note concluded.

Mahmudullah played his final game for the nation against New Zealand in the recently-concluded Champions Trophy. Post the conclusion of the 50-over event, both his and Mushfiqur Rahim’s place in the national side had severely come into scrutiny. The latter recently called it a day from ODIs, with Mahmudullah treading the same path as his longstanding teammate.
