‘Take that as a huge compliment’ – Chinelle Henry on being compared with Andre Russell

West Indian middle-order batter, Chinelle Henry, recently represented UP Warriorz in the 2025 edition of the Women’s Premier League. Her most-impactful knock was the one against Delhi Capitals Women, during which she smashed her way to a 23-ball 62. Despite her relatively decent performances with bat and ball, her side finished at the bottom of the points table.

In a recent discussion, she revealed her first idol after starting to get immersed in cricket and why AB de Villiers stood out for her.

“To be honest, growing up, I never really used to watch a lot of cricket. But when I really got into it and started understanding more, the first player I started watching was AB de Villiers. His fielding, his batting, his all-around ability was someone I wanted to be like. The way he could hit the ball and change games was just incredible,” stated Henry, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Henry also shed light on her comparisons with Andre Russell and how she strives on replicating his on-field brilliance every time she steps on the field.

“After AB retired, my focus shifted to my fellow countryman, Andre Russell. Back home, many have compared me to him as the female version, and I take that as a huge compliment. To be able to replicate his power-hitting and match-winning performances in my own game has been a goal of mine. I’ve been working hard to improve and bring that same impact to my team,” she added.

The West Indian also opened up on playing under Deepti Sharma’s leadership in the absence of their full-time skipper, Alyssa Healy.

“It probably took her by surprise when Healy was ruled out. Yes, she’s been around the Indian setup, but captaining a team with different cultures, personalities, and languages is not easy. On the field, communication can be tough, especially in noisy conditions, but she always asks for help and listens to the ideas of others. She trusts her players and is open to learning,” observed Henry.

Henry is expected to feature for West Indies Women next across May and June later this year. The West Indian unit is scheduled to tour England for three T20Is followed by as many ODIs.
