Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma should think about retirement after winning the 2027 ODI World Cup: Yograj Singh

Former India cricketer Yograj Singh was happy to hear Rohit Sharma confirming that he wasn’t contemplating retirement after the Mumbai cricketer led the Men in Blue to a first Champions Trophy win in 12 years on Sunday, March 9. During the post-match press conference, Rohit, who scored a match-winning 76 off 83 balls in the final against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, clarified speculations about his future in the national team.

Yograj backed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to play at least till the 2027 ODI World Cup before making their retirement calls. The former India seamer said that nobody can force Rohit and Kohli to hang their boots.

“The best thing is that Rohit Sharma said he is not retiring. Well done, my son. Nobody can retire Rohit and Virat. They should think about retirement after winning the 2027 ODI World Cup. I had said this before India would win,” Yograj was quoted as saying by India Today.

Yuvraj Singh’s father came out to defend Rohit, who had been trolled because of his fitness by a section of fans on social media. Yograj lambasted the critics and said that people like Shama Mohamed (Congress leader) should prove their fitness first before questioning Rohit.

“Some people were raising questions about Rohit Sharma’s fitness. I want to ask Madam (Congress leader Shama Mohamed) about her fitness. It does not suit them to comment on players,” Yograj concluded.

Rohit gave India some quickfire starts during the 2025 Champions Trophy but couldn’t register a substantial score heading into the final. However, the 37-year-old saved his best knock for the biggest stage as his half-century helped India win the summit clash by four wickets with an over to spare. Meanwhile, Kohli finished as the second-highest run-getter for the Asian giants, amassing 218 runs from five innings at an average of 54.50.
