Virat Kohli touched Mohammed Shami’s mother’s feet in a heartwarming moment after India emerged victorious in the 2025 Champions Trophy clash against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. On Sunday, March 9, India won the eight-team tournament by defeating Mitchell Santner’s New Zealand by four wickets in the final. After the historic triumph, the Indian players began their celebrations on the field alongside their family members.

During the post-match celebrations, Kohli met Shami’s family and sought blessings from the seamer’s mother. He also posed for a picture with Shami’s family.

The former India captain has been criticised for his aggressive attitude on several occasions during his career. However, the respect he shows towards Shami’s mother exhibits his traditional values. Kohli was seen smiling from ear to ear as he soaked in the applause from the fans who had turned up to watch the summit clash in Dubai.

Mohammed Shami wins first ICC title in international career

Shami made his international debut in January 2013. He delivered many significant performances for India in ICC events but never got his hands on a title. That changed on Sunday as he got his hands on the coveted Champions Trophy for the first time.

India won the T20 World Cup last year, but Shami was on the sidelines, nursing an injury. During the 2025 Champions Trophy, the 34-year-old picked up nine wickets from five matches at an average of 25.88 and an economy rate of 5.68. His best performance came against Bangladesh in the first match of the campaign, when he bagged a five-for. In the semi-finals, he bowled well against Australia and picked up three wickets.

India won the final by four wickets, chasing down a 252-run target in 49 overs on the back of a blistering half-century from skipper Rohit Sharma.
