Twitter Reactions: Rohit Sharma leads from front as India lift Champions Trophy after 12 years

India beat New Zealand by four wickets to win the Champions Trophy 2025 final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, March 9.

Opting to bat first, New Zealand got off to a blistering start as Rachin Ravindra took Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Shami to the cleaners. The in-form Varun Chakaravarthy gave India their first breakthrough as he dismissed Will Young in the eighth over.

The Kiwis had already raced to 57 at that stage. Ravindra and Kane Williamson were dismissed in quick succession by Kuldeep Yadav as the Kiwis slumped to 75/3. Tom Latham and Daryl Mitchell tried to form a partnership before the former fell to Ravindra Jadeja.

Glenn Phillips and Mitchell played watchfully and formed a 57-run partnership off 87 balls. However, Chakaravarthy accounted for the wicket of Phillips as the Kiwis lost half of their side for 165 runs in the 38th over. Mitchell scored a sedate half-century before Michael Bracewell played a fine hand down the order. The latter amassed an unbeaten 53 off 40 balls as New Zealand finished on 251/7 in their 50 overs. Apart from Kuldeep, Chakaravarthy also bagged two wickets.

In reply, the Men in Blue got the ideal start, thanks to Rohit Sharma’s blitzkrieg at the top of the order. He stitched a 105-run stand with Shubman Gill at the top of the order.  The latter was dismissed for 31 thanks to a stunning catch from Phillips. Virat Kohli was dismissed in the following over as New Zealand fought their way back into the game. Rohit also fell in quick succession as India lost three wickets for 122 runs.

Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel combined well to form a crucial 61-run partnership. After Iyer was dismissed two runs short of his half-century, Axar and KL Rahul forged a 20-run stand in quick time to keep the scoreboard moving. However, an irresponsible shot led to Axar’s dismissal. Hardik Pandya joined Rahul in the middle and they forged a 38-run stand off 36 balls to take India to the brink. After Hardik departed, Jadeja and Rahul completed the formalities as India won with an over to spare. Bracewell and Santner took two wickets apiece but they just did not have enough runs on the board.
