OTD | South Africa clinched a landmark victory in India, thrashing them by an innings in the second Test in 2000

On this day, back on March 6, 2000, the South African side achieved a remarkable win against Team India in the second Test match of the series, winning by an innings and 71 runs. This game took place at M. Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium, Bengaluru, and marked a significant milestone for the Proteas as they grabbed a 2-0 series win.

The South African side, led by Hansie Cronje, dominated the thriller from the start of the game. On the flip side, Sachin Tendulkar-led Team India struggled to make an impact on their home turf and made just 158 runs in the first innings, with Anil Kumble being the highest run scorer of the side, having made 36 runs.

Notably, South Africa’s batting lineup was magnificent with a total of 479 runs in their first innings of the game. However, no Proteas batter was able to rack up a century in the game. Lance Klusener came close with 97 runs off 169 balls, and Anil Kumble took six wickets but failed to guide India to victory.

Coming to the second innings of the game, the hosts were able to pile up just 250 runs on the board with Mohammad Azharuddin making a notable 102 runs. However, this was not enough to prevent them from grabbing the win by an innings and 71 runs in the game.

This win marked the first time a visiting side had won a Test series in India in 13 years, showcasing the Protea’s superior performance during the tour. This magnificent win was a result of South Africa’s strength and skills during the game.

On the flip side, Team India, this series was a disappointment, especially given their home record. Despite winning the ODI series 3-2, Team India’s Test performance was below par, and they faced significant challenges in competing against a well-organized South African side. The series has also marked a turning point for the two sides, with South Africa showcasing their potential as a dominant force in international cricket.
