Former Indian cricketing great Yuvraj Singhrecently put out a heartwarming tweet about Steve Smith after the latter called it a day from ODI cricket. Yuvraj recounted the bubbly version of Smith during their shared stint at Pune Warriors India. The ex-Indian all-rounder emphasised Smith’s influence on and off the field and conveyed his best wishes for the former’s cricketing future.

Yuvraj’s note comes after Smith announced his retirement from the 50-over format hours after Australia’s recent semi-final exit from the Champions Trophy 2025 at the hands of India. India clinched victory by a four-wicket margin in Dubai on Tuesday, March 4. Smith was the highest run-scorer for Australia, accumulating 73 off 96 deliveries.

Yuvraj and Smith were a part of the now-defunct Pune Warriors India setup in the 2013 edition, their third and final season in the Indian Premier League. The two played a total of five matches together.

Smith’s ODI journey at a glance

Speaking of Steve Smith’s numbers in ODIs, the seasoned veteran represented Australia in 170 games, scoring 5,800 runs and possessing an average of 43.28. He amassed a total of 35 fifties and 12 tons. Starting his career as a leg-spinning all-rounder, he also has 28 wickets under his belt.

The 35-year-old captained the Australian one-day setup for a total of 64 matches, winning 32 of them. He maintained a slightly better batting average as skipper (43.65 vs 43.04). Smith will continue representing Australia in Tests and T20Is.
