Australia don’t seem to have the spin attack required for Dubai’s conditions: Sunil Gavaskar

The Indian team is set to play their semi-final match against Australia at the Dubai International Stadium on Tuesday, March 4. This is poised to be another iconic battle between two teams with a history of great matches in the past including in ICC events.

Though the Aussies have had an edge over India in ICC knockout matches they have been facing some issues especially regarding their bowling attack. Former India legend Sunil Gavaskar shared his views on this matter, mentioning the slightly weaker spin attack and the absence of premier pacers Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood who have been ruled out due to either injuries or personal reasons.

“On this surface, yes, because Australia don’t seem to have the kind of spinning attack, apart from the fact that they are missing out on key players like Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, Their batting is good. The batting is very aggressive. The ideal thing would be for India maybe to chase, rather than having Australia chase,” Gavaskar said to India Today.

The former India legend did not only stop there but also went on to talk about the Dubai pitch after some people said that it was almost impossible to bat on the surface, referring to the grip and turn the Indian spinners were getting during the match against New Zealand. Gavaskar shut down the naysayers, mentioning it is not an impossible surface to bat on.

“Not at all. Well, if you had a look at our spinners in the first few overs, they did not get much help. Later on, as the pitch got a little bit better after the rolling after the dew had settled in, there was a little more grip for the spinners, but it wasn’t an impossible pitch, There was a bit of turn. It’s just that the bowlers did so well that it was impossible for New Zealanders,” the former India skipper added.
