The thrilling ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is knocking on the door and the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has proactively increased its efforts to ensure the availability of the star India pacer, Jasprit Bumrah. A dedicated three-member team at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, has been assigned to oversee his recovery process. Bumrah, who sustained a back injury during the Sydney Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year, is currently undergoing rehabilitation.

The 31-year-old’s injury concerns have been a major setback for Team India, especially considering his crucial role in the bowling attack. The speedster has not played a match since January when he was forced to rest due to a stress reaction in his back. Given his history of back injuries, the BCCI is taking cautious steps while also trying to speed up his return in time for the prestigious tournament.

According to reports, Bumrah recently completed a five-week offloading phase, where he was advised to take complete rest, including a break from gym work. He is now in the rehabilitation phase at the CoE, where a specialized team has been assigned to monitor his progress.

“Strength and Conditioning (S&C) coach Rajnikanth Sivagnanam and physio Thulasi Ram Yuvraj are currently working on Bumrah’s rehabilitation with the Head of Sports Science, Dr Nitin Patel, personally monitoring the whole process. Obviously, the national team S&C coach Soham Desai and physio Kamlesh Jain are also kept in the loop,” said a BCCI official as quoted by News18.

February 11 is deadline for final squad submission for Champions Trophy

The CoE follows a structured recovery program that includes one strength-and-conditioning coach, one physiotherapist, and a specialized coach to oversee skill-based aspects of recovery. While Soham Desai is currently with the Indian team for the ongoing home series against England, fast-bowling coach Troy Cooley is expected to take charge once Bumrah resumes bowling.

The final medical report on Bumrah’s fitness will be submitted by Dr Patel to BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia and Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma will also be kept informed before a final decision is made. With February 11 being the deadline for final squad submissions for the Champions Trophy 2025, Bumrah’s recovery has become of the utmost importance. If the pacer remains doubtful, the Men in Blue might opt for a replacement, with Harshit Rana being the frontrunner.

However, if the selectors believe he can recover in time for the later stages of the tournament, they might retain him in the squad and get ICC approval for a late replacement if necessary. Rohit and C0. are set to begin its Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by clashes against Pakistan on February 23 and New Zealand on March 2.
