OTD | England sealed their first series win in Pakistan in 22 years in 2022

OTD | England sealed their first series win in Pakistan in 22 years in 2022

Two years back on this day, it was a winter afternoon in Western Punjab’s Multan when England created history by winning a Test series after a long wait of 22 years in Pakistan. The second Test in Multan was concluded when Mohammed Ali was nicked behind and caught by Ollie Pope on the delivery bowled by Robinson.

With this 26-run win in the second Test in Multan, England had taken an unassailable lead of 2-0 to seal the three-match Test series. Later, they went on to win the third and last Test by an 8-wicket margin to register a clean sweep series win by 3-0.

Returning to England’s historic win in the second Test in Multan, it came just on the fourth day of the game when the hosts were bundled out at the score of 328 runs in their second innings.

Pakistan failed to survive against England’s bowling attack in the Multan Test

Earlier in the beginning of the match, the visiting skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to bat first. The Three Lions posted a score of 281 runs in 51.4 overs in the first innings courtesy of two half-centuries scored by Ben Duckett (63 runs) and Ollie Pope (60 runs).

However, England took hold of the game as they wrapped Pakistan’s first innings at the score of 202 runs, taking a lead of 79 runs. Pakistan skipper Babar Azam and middle-order batter Saud Shakeel scored half-centuries but they couldn’t help Pakistan to get a first-innings lead.

Later in the second innings, England posted a gritty total of 275 runs courtesy of Harry Brook’s century, scoring 108 runs, with 14 fours and a six. Besides him, opener Ben Duckett also scored 79 runs, hitting six fours followed by skipper Stokes’ 41 runs in the end.

While chasing a big target of 355 runs in the fourth innings, Pakistan got some hope with the half-centuries scored by Saud Shakeel (94 runs) and Imam-ul-Haq (60 runs) but the lower middle-order failed to capitalize on these two good knocks. Eventually, England bundled out Pakistan at the score of 328 runs and won the game by 26 runs to seal the historic Test series win, which was awaited for a 22-year-long period.
