OTD | 1988 and 2004, Two hundreds of Sachin Tendulkar

The greatest ever to play the game of Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar, made two historic hundreds on this day in 1988 and 2004. The first occurred in 1988 when Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium hosted a Ranji Trophy match against Gujarat. The Master Blaster was only 15 years old at the time, making him the youngest Indian first-class centurion, and it was Tendulkar’s first-class debut.

In the first session of the second day, Tendulkar walked to bat after Lalchand Rajput was run out at 99. After gaining a 254-run lead, he hammered 129 runs with 12 boundaries, helping Mumbai declare their innings at 394 for the loss of six wickets. Pradeep Kasliwal and Anup Sabnis knocked out the visitors for 306 runs, sharing seven wickets between them. To win the game, Mumbai ultimately required just 53 runs in their second innings. It ended in a draw, though, and they lost by 10 runs. 

The second hundred was scored against Bangladesh in the first Test match in a two-match series in 2004. He tied his idol and former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar’s record of 34 Test hundreds with an undefeated 159 runs in Dhaka on December 11. When Tendulkar batted again the next day, he scored his highest-ever 248 not out. There were 38 boundaries in Tendulkar’s knock, which came off 379 balls. On the strength of Tendulkar’s double hundred, India responded to Bangladesh’s 184/10 in the first innings with an incredible 526 runs at a cost of ten wickets.

Bangladesh’s batters struggled against India’s bowling attack, as they were bowled out for 202 runs in the second innings, losing the Test match by an innings and 140 runs, same as their first innings. To secure a 2-0 series, Team India won the second and final Test match of their tour by an innings and 84 runs. Meanwhile Anil Kumble also broke the record of legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev.
