Throwback to Gary Kirsten’s heroics in South Africa’s five-wicket win over New Zealand in Kimberley

Throwback to Gary Kirsten's heroics in South Africa's five-wicket win over New Zealand in Kimberley

On This Day in Year 2000, South Africa clinched a thrilling five-wicket win against New Zealand in the fourth ODI at Kimberley’s De Beers Diamond Oval, driven by an extraordinary performance from Gary Kirsten. His century anchored the chase, and his 172-run stand with Jacques Kallis became the backbone of a successful pursuit, cementing South Africa’s 3-0 series lead in the six-match showdown.

Batting first, New Zealand had a promising start, powered by a formidable 110-run partnership between Stephen Fleming and Roger Twose for the third wicket. Fleming’s composed 85 off 103 balls and Twose’s aggressive 89 off 91 were essential in propelling the visitors to a challenging 287/6 in 50 overs.

Twose’s innings, however, came with a bit of luck—early in his knock, he narrowly escaped a run-out after Jonty Rhodes’ sharp fielding flicked the ball into the stumps. Unfortunately for South Africa, a power failure interfered with the third umpire’s camera feed, leaving Wilf Diedricks unable to deliver a conclusive decision on Twose’s dismissal. Twose capitalized on this second chance, unleashing nine boundaries and a six.

A historic run chase!

South Africa’s chase began on shaky ground when opener Darryl Cullinan departed for 17, caught off Chris Cairns. However, Gary Kirsten’s assured presence at the crease soon changed the momentum. His perfectly paced innings of 101 showcased his experience and finesse.

Joined by Kallis, who contributed a well-crafted 93, Kirsten formed the backbone of a steady and determined partnership that gradually wore down the New Zealand bowling attack. Kirsten reached his century with precision, eventually falling to Cairns, but by then, South Africa had gained a strong foothold in the chase.

Despite the late departure of Jonty Rhodes and Lance Klusener, Nicky Boje and Mark Boucher stayed calm, carrying South Africa over the finish line in 48.5 overs with five wickets to spare. With this win, South Africa solidified a 3-0 lead in the series, with Kirsten named the well-deserved Player of the Match.
